In February 2023, ABC celebrated their five-year anniversary with a celebration luncheon with Guest Speaker, Author Ms. Alice Marie Johnson.  Ms. Johnson served 20 years of a life sentence for a first time nonviolent drug offense.  Kim Kardashian advocated for her and she was granted a full presidential pardon in 2020.  Ms. Johnson's story is chronicled in her memoir, After Life:  My Journey from Incarceration to Freedom.  The future vision is bright and exciting with additional ABC Book Clubs in Arizona and other states forthcoming.

About the Founder

Rosiland (Roz) Robinson  grew up in Davenport, IA within a family of five siblings.  She received her B.A. in Business Administration from St Ambrose University, IA and thereafter moved to Los Angeles, CA where she built a human resources career for 20 years plus working with a corporate LLC and the Federal government.   After relocation to AZ, Rosiland was instrumental in implementing the State of Arizona’s reentry employment initiative at Perryville Women’s prison in Goodyear, AZ.   Roz's passion for reading books started at a young age and finally in 2018, she started the book club, A Book in Common (ABC) based in Goodyear, AZ.

ABC received the 2023 Community Service Award at National Book Club Conference for commendable work in serving others. Roz is pictured with Motown Recording Artist, Kem who recently wrote his autobiography, Share My Life.

ABC is unique as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization serving our community through encouraging reading.  We recently donated items for hygiene bags to support a non-profit that assists the homelessness.  In addition, we have 2 primary goals within our community service sphere:

  • Start a Perryville Women's Prison Chapter in Goodyear, AZ.

  • Identify Title I schools in Metro Phoenix to provide funds for targeted students to purchase books during their school book fairs.
